City of Fairfax, is an independent city in the heart of Fairfax County, Virginia. Located 16 miles southwest of Washington, D.C., it is Metro accessible through the Vienna station on the Orange Line. The city derives its name from Thomas Fairfax, 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron, a friend of George Washington in his youth, who was awarded five million acres in land by King Charles. The award was a political payoff to allies of the King during the civil war in England in the mid-1600’s.

The area was developed in the early 18th century by farmers who established it as the Town of Providence by an act of the state legislature in 1805. After the Civil War, Fairfax was officially renamed the Town of Fairfax in 1874, and became an independent city in 1961, where it was officially named the City of Fairfax. Today, Fairfax is considered one of the most desirable places to live in America. In 2009, Forbes rankedFairfax Number 3 in the “Top 25 Places to Live Well”. One reason, said the magazine, is that it is “A great place for entrepreneurs.”

Residents who reside in Fairfax love the shopping, restaurants and convenience. Old Town Plaza, a central point in the city, is an exciting combination of office, boutique retail, restaurants, sidewalk cafés and a beautiful open plaza with plenty of parking. Together, it creates a vibrant downtown destination. In the summer, the streets are shut down some Friday nights, with a live band and beer garden taking center stage. George Mason University, Virginia’s largest public institution is also located nearby and hosts several events, concerts, and sporting events throughout the year. Fairfax offers everything a modern city should; nearby convenience, a place of history, and a touch of class. When asked by the residents how they would describe the area, they say simply “we are just proud to just call it home.
